After three decades of unfriendly supremacy, CRYPTOPSY still makes blasphemy sound fresh, but many underground metalheads attribute the JUNO Award-winners' resurgence to the two EPs they released in the mid-2010s.
"This is without a doubt the best material the band has released in the new century," Decibel wrote of 'The Book of Suffering' upon the arrival of the first volume in 2015. Three years later, when the band opened its second chapter, Angry Metal Guy was upbeat: "The band is once again at the forefront of creative brutality."
Although spread across two EPs, "The Book of Suffering" was always intended as a companion piece. CRYPTOPSY framed Tome I around the concept of those phobophiles among us who cause suffering (including a twisted but true story about a Greyhound bus trip that went horribly wrong). Meanwhile, Tome II shifts the perspective to those who have escaped their tormentors. "Sire of Sin" - a ripping escape from a notorious religious cult - quickly became a fixture in the band's ever-changing set list.
Tomes I & II of "The Book of Suffering" were originally released independently. Now that both EPs are available on one combined vinyl for the first time, fans can finally suffer in peace.
